Our Wedding Video

I struggled with the decision whether or not to hire a videographer for the wedding. I had a friend who made sure they had enough money for one and another who didn't do it at all and didn't regret it. I was torn... UNTIL I stumbled upon Colin. He lives in LA but was raised in Minnesota. He had the aesthetic I was wanting in a wedding video and he was so easy to work with. I can't tell you how many emails we had back and forth with questions and concerns from me and answers and reassurance from Colin.

We didn't meet until he morning of the wedding and he was great! My husband to be couldn't stop talking about what a cool guy he was. To be honest if we ever make it to LA for a trip we will probably call him up so we can hang out.

Hi Ladies! Yes, it's me, Kirby! You are all probably wondering where I've been, and the truth is, I've just been busy and have had to put blogging to the side for a little bit. I'll bring you up to date on what has been going on with me.

I went to my cousins wedding in South Dakota, couldn't fly back to NYC because of the hurricane, made it back in time for labor day weekend, enjoyed it with my fiance, signed us up for dance lessons, working out and getting in shape for the big day, making sure everything for the wedding is set and if it isn't spend my evenings working them out. And that's about it! so yup, we are getting married in 2 1/2 weeks. It is coming up quickly. I'm heading for Minnesota in a week to do all the last week things that you can't do until the last week AND finally get my dress fitted and altered.

The image above is just so beautiful, the dress is stunning and is totally inspiring me as I set off to create a collection of my own! So happy Wednesday everyone! Glad to be back!

Last week I mentioned in this post that I wanted to re-focus my blog. I want to take Colors of Honey to the next level. Having a business of my own has always been a dream of mine. While I may not be there yet, I want to start taking the steps towards that goal.

obviously the first step is to create a product(yes, I am working on bigger product than what I have currently in my etsy shop). Those of you who have been following me for a while can probably guess what that is.

The second, in my opinion anyways, would be branding and marketing. Isn't the above image of the branding eye-catching? This is where you come in. I would love your tips, ideas and your help. Have you been through this yourself before? know anyone that would be able to work with my non-existent budget and would be able to help me create a brand of my own? I know a little of what I need to do and how I can market myself and my product, but there is the creative end, the tying it all together that I just need an outsiders eye and help on. come on, don't be shy, leave a comment or send me an email {colorsofhoney@gmail.com} I'm sure we could work something out!

Today I'm working on a custom hair piece request (don't you just love my phone quality photo that I took too late into the night?) Oh, you didn't know I did that? well now you do! I really love working with brides to create a product they are in love with and is exactly what they dreamed of. It really makes the hard work and long hours pay off.

speaking of dreams, my dream is to one day have a space of my own that I can invite brides to meet with me in person for consultation on either a custom accessory or wedding gown. I can just picture it now, light grey paint on the walls, a big comfy couch and bridal magazines on the coffee table so you and your mom(or MOH) can flip through and continue to be inspired about your big day. There would be a rack of sample dresses(made by yours truly), open shelves of sashes, hair clips, headbands and then there would be the variety of veils to try on. Then there would be a dressing room with so many mirrors you could just loose yourself(sounds dreamy, right?)

A real wedding to 'Cherish': Katie and Cory

I recently received a sweet email the other week from a 'newlywed'. Katie and Cory were married May 2010 in Louisville, Kentucky. Yes I think you should be newlywed's for a while, after all 10 years together is still young compared to 50! This is what Katie had to say about their wedding day.

From the Bride: If I’m going to tell you about my wedding, I want to start with the word cherish.

Cherish came to English via the French verb “chérir” with little change in meaning. The Oxford English dictionary defines it as “to hold dear, treat with tenderness and affection, to make much of.” I cannot think of a better word to associate with our wedding. It was a day to hold our family and friends dear, to treat each other with tenderness and affection, and a celebration to make much of.

I spent eight months preparing for our wedding. I planned, crafted, sewed, made invitations, made playlists, and occasionally cried over the guest list that grew exponentially. The day came and I went through the regular preparations—hair, make-up, gown, veil, etc. Our “first look” moment was sweet and had exactly the calming effect I intended; the bridal stage fright I’d had from the moment I got engaged disappeared. We took photos outside, on the first sunny and comfortable day in weeks, with our relatives and laughed with our families. We went into the church for the ceremony, which featured misty-eyed parents and grandparents, a corny joke from our pastor and friend that still made us laugh, and a wedding ring that wouldn’t go over my knuckle (I wriggled it on when everyone closed their eyes for prayer). I don’t even remember what song played as we walked back out of the church, partly because I was preoccupied by the whole being married thing and partly because I was making a conscious effort not to trip over my own feet or dress. Then there were more photos, goofy faces from our ringbearer, a quiet moment together, and we went in for the reception. We ate and then someone—my dad, probably, stood up for the first toast.

Then the day turned from memorable to unforgettable. We hadn’t planned how the toasts would go; we figured our siblings and parents would say something and then we’d move on to the next thing. Instead, we sat listening to at least ten different people who stood and offered us support, kindness, wisdom, and the occasional goofy story from childhood.

All those months of preparation were devoted to planning a big party for the people I love, but nothing could have prepared me for the great outpouring of love that we felt on that day, not just from each other, but from the people who came. That atmosphere of friendship and joy is what I will always remember from our wedding, even if my dress was completely perfect and my husband isn’t so bad, either.

Katie's advise for other brides: When receiving opinions and pressure from people- listen, smile, acknowledge their idea, then do whatever you like. I figured this out halfway through planning my wedding and it definitely helped keep my head on straight! I got a few great ideas from people by listening, but also left more than a few ideas out. Most of them were good, but not right for our wedding.
I also reminded myself frequently that the wedding was to celebrate our marriage's beginning, and that our marriage, not a perfect day, was the point. To further this end, I read articles and books on marriage prep and I made a point to have at least one day a week with no planning and plenty of relaxed time with my husband-to-be. It helps keep perspective!

So sorry for my absence and lack of posts. I have been re-evaluating my little blog for a few weeks now and to be honest my feelings about it go up and down. After reading a post by this inspiring young woman about her own blog, I couldn't help but think that I wanted to do the same for Colors of Honey.

I truly want to take my blogging to the next level, I want to bring my readers one of a kind inspiration that comes from yours truly and I want to continue to inspire your wedding fashion for years to come.

Now that the invites are sent and we are starting to receive replies in the mail(isn't this so exciting!), I've turned my focus on the last little details and of course, sprucing up our registries. I'm not a greedy person at all, but I know this is apart of the process and having been a guest at weddings previously, it does help in the gift purchasing process. Especially if you are a young couple and have a cluster of things that you've received as hand-me-downs through out the year, this is a chance to start creating a home together. Bridesmaid Luncheon

Last weekend when many of my friends were in town, I threw a picnic style luncheon for my bridesmaids! I wanted to treat them to a yummy lunch to thank them for being there for me during all the wedding planning as well as flying to NYC for the weekend.

It was the hottest weekend ever last weekend (I felt so bad keeping them in my apartment with my shotty AC) so we found a space in the shade in central park. It wasn't ideal with a hot breeze that kept hitting us, but it would do.

With some ideas from Brandi, I made tea sandwiches. An egg salad sandwich, strawberry w/goat cheese sandwich and a pear w/cucumber and Swiss sandwich all served with a light berry side salad and home made honey balsamic dressing and fresh fruit to nibble on. I also bought a lemonade which I added seltzer and fresh lemon slices and raspberries to for an added freshness! For desert I had plans to make this buckle cake, but I couldn't bring myself to turn on my oven so I went for easy and oh-so-delicious cupcakes from Crumbs Bakery and kept with my fruit theme with berry berry cupcakes a blueberry and a peach cobbler cupcake!

I'm in Bridesmaid mode right now. Most of my BM's are heading to NYC next weekend for what I expect to be a fabulous bachelorette party and I know that we will talk about their dress, which shoes they are going to wear, how they want to do their hair, etc...

T and I have been wondering what kind of gifts to get his groomsmen for the wedding. There are such a wide range of men in our wedding party that we want them all to like and get use out of whatever it is that we get them. We've already purchased their ties for the wedding so that has been taken care of, but then I saw this tutorial on how to make a toiletry traveling case that I new instantly that I could make some manly versions. I'm sure that some will think they will probably never use it, but I hope that a day will come and they will be so glad they have that underneath their bathroom sink when they go on a trip. Plus we'll probably fill it with some travel size products and other things they could use for the wedding day!

wedding Plans: Honeymoon Decisions

T and I are headed for a cruise stopping in Greece and Turkey for our honeymoon. We extended our trip a few days past the end of the cruise so we could further explore the area. the problem, we have no idea where our last 3 nights should best be spent! Ruelala has some great deals in 4 different, beautiful, cities in Greece and I thought I would get your opinion! So tell me, have you even been? If so, which of these four cities would you recommend more time in to explore or relax (besides the 12 hours or so while the cruise is at port).

The cities of choice are

Personally I've heard Santorini would be the place to go, but I also feel like there would be some beautiful sites to visit in Athens as well! I'll give a more detailed recap of our honeymoon plans another time, so don't you worry!

And yes, we will stop in all of these cities during our cruise.

Happy Monday everyone! I hope you all had wonderful weekends and thanks for all your comments on last Friday's post. The stress has definitely passed and I'm ready to tackle any and all the bumps that we hit on the way to the alter!

Wedding Plans: Stress

when trying to think of what wedding topic I wanted to present to all of you fabulous readers I can't help but feel a tremendous amount of stress at this moment. We all stress about different things, matching the exact color of a place mat to a bridesmaid dress, the shape of our bouquet to the weather forecast.

Me? I stress out about invites and saving hundreds of dollars by thinking I could do them myself. I was beside myself when printers quoted me almost $1000 to print my invites(invites that my friend would be designing and I would assemble myself, because they charge more to assemble and stuff them into envelopes). Maybe I was looking in all the wrong places, but no thanks. So I decided to take them on myself. easy, right? buy paper, print and assemble. Wrong! So Wrong!

After multiple attempts to print, files not doing what we want them to do and printers getting jammed, I sit here with a nice class of red wine holding my breath during my final attempt to DIY.

It worked! I had almost given up hope. I was starting to think that we would not be able to hire the videographer so we could put that money toward printing the invitations.

If there is any advice I can give to other brides is to take one day at a time, ask for help and prioritize. If you are stressing out about something that is near the bottom of your priority list then you it's probably nothing to stress over. I'm not sure if there is a bigger lesson to be learned here, but I felt the need to share all the highs and lows of my personal wedding planning process.

What I learned tonight is to keep faith and everything will work out.

I would love to do something like this for our dads, grandpa's and ushers to save on flower boutonnieres, especially since we are incorporating burlap and some other DIY elements, but the feathers won't go with our wedding style.

Lots and Lots of Love

Hello Lovelies! I hope you all had a relaxing and refreshing weekend!

I wanted to share with you this darling wedding with a wedding dress I LOVE. I think the back on the dress is simply perfect and is a great fit for their intimate Malaysian wedding.

I also love the shots of the couple with their families, more natural and less posed. I see something like this for my own wedding; me fixing my mom and sisters dresses, mom fixing dads tie and my dad laughing at all of his girls fussing about every little thing and shaking the hand of my new husband. (I like to play out scenarios in my head a lot)

I also couldn't help but include a picture of this bride and groom both wiping tears from their eyes.

You can see they are so in Love.

Wedding Plans: Staying Organized

A few people I know have gotten engaged after I had started planning my wedding and the first advise I give them is to find a way to stay organized that works best for them. In general I am a list person. I make lists for everything and wedding planning was no exception. List's of crafts and gifts, guest lists, lists of things to buy and do! This works for me, so it worked with planning my wedding. I also Love planners. A co-worker of mine bought me a pre-made wedding planning binder and it was a great help! there are so many though, I'm kinda glad she bought one for me and I didn't have to go sit in the book store for hours trying to figure out which one would do the job. In the end I out grew the binder and transferred everything into a bigger one and bought clear sleeves to keep color swatches, programs from other weddings, tear sheets of inspiration, receipts, estimates from vendors and sign contracts. Pretty much everything you would need to know about our wedding is in there.

On top of lists and our binder I am also OBSESSED with Google Calendar. below are my tentative and generic schedules for the day before our wedding and the wedding day. I can be as detailed as I want, I can share with my mom, vendors and bridesmaids. they can be printed out and passed around so everyone apart of your day is aware of what is going on and when they need to do certain things. The options are endless. I also have this linked with my phone so I can update on the go!

When the day gets closer I'll most likely get more specific on the wedding day and break things down even more.

One thing I should mention is that I have asked a friend to act as my 'day of coordinator'. I asked her because she has done this before, recently planned and executed her wedding gracefully and isn't in the bridal party. So while we are taking pictures she will be making sure the reception is all set to go while our guests are enjoying the social hour!

Wedding Plans: Bridal Shower

Last weekend I flew home to Minnesota for a mini wedding weekend. among other things I spent a lot of time with my family and had some bridal showers!

But my first stop off the plane was lunch with some of the wonderful women in my family. We ate at this cute little place right on the St. Croix river with a great menu! I couldn't complain with a strawberry and basil mojito and a sweet potato and avocado sandwich!

My Aunt Jody, cousin Courtney and family friend Sue threw this one(I had two in one day due to time constraints) and it was so much fun! Plus it was great just to see everyone all together. I even had family drive up from Kansas and South Dakota!

I'll share pictures from my second shower another day as I haven't downloaded all my photos yet. I hope your weekend weather is beautiful! I'm taking advantage of a 1/2 day at work and going to lay in the park with my fiance and finish writing my thank you cards!

Wedding Plans: the Veil!

As you read yesterday I am back in Minnesota this weekend (where my wedding will be held) and I have lot things to do. Two tasks on my list is my hair trial and dress fitting that I will share with you another time. BUT because I was doing those two things I wanted to make sure to have a veil to try on with the dress and the hair. I wanted to make sure what I had in mind would all work together.

I found this great chart showing many of the different veil types(although I believe there to be many more). I am planning on wearing a Cathedral length veil, no blusher and just placed at the back of my head under all my hair, since my hair will be up in some sort of fashion. The cathedral veil is the longest of the veils and I'm hoping it will have a dramatic affect as I walk down the aisle inside the old church were we are getting married.

These two images are so beautiful and I can't wait to be one of those brides. If you are wondering what you do with a veil that long during the reception I'll tell you that I plan on removing mine after some pictures. I'll also have a hair piece (that is so gorgeous and I can't wait to show you) so I will have something in my hair for dinner and dancing.

When I get back from my trip I'll give you all a full report of how it went. I'll also work up a little DIY post as I made my veil (it actually took me about 20 mins). Veils can cost an arm and a leg these days, but if you are trying to save and just want something simple, making your own is the way to go!

Wedding Plans: Mother of the Bride

Last weekend while my mom was visiting I made us a little appointment at Bloomingdale’s for a little personal shopping experience. Our goal was to find a dress for my mom to wear to the wedding. The look I had in mind was glamorous and fun. As we get older age is a weird thing to discuss, but I would say that my mom is young and she wants to have a good time at the wedding. At any family gathering my mom is always the first one to start dancing. So we definitely wanted to play to her personality and not put her in an ‘old lady’ dress.

We tried on some beautiful dresses, 3 that looks beautiful and she could have walked out of the store with, but one of those just stood out, as soon as she put it on, we all new. Below is the dress she picked with my own selection on jewelry. She already has shoes, but they are similar to these and she wants to have some sort of red jewelry (since red is one of my wedding colors). So I picked some simple drop earrings from Kate Spade and a beautiful bracelet from J.Crew.

So tonight I'm going to pick up some samples of paper to put together one full invitation suite. I want to see it all together (and to make sure I don't hate a color paper before buying it in bulk) and make sure everything can be printed and assembled by myself and some willing friends. I can't help but fall in love with all the beautiful invitations out there and this is just one of them.

I love this picture of the groom and his wedding party. the main reason is because red and orange are the colors we are using for our wedding, so this is totally inspiring. Can you just imagine them in black and grey suits with those shirt and ties?! Okay so I had this post all ready to go for you on Friday and then something happend with Blogger and it completely deleted! arg! so lets try this again, okay?

Welcome Bags. An important detail in a wedding with people driving or flying from far away. Not just for those couples getting married on a beach in Mexico anymore.

This weekend my mom and sister ~~are~~ were in town and we ~~will be working~~ worked on welcome bags for our wedding! I'm so excited about this project because I get to show my creativity and I think it will be a nice touch to those guests walking into their hotel room after a long drive or delayed flights to see a little present waiting for them.

Since I do not live in Minnesota at the moment, I've asked my mom to help shop for items that will be going inside our welcome bags. I like this list from Ruffled which is a great start to any welcome bag!

1. A Thank You card.
2. A Welcome note.
3. Water bottle.
4. A map (they’re often free). Also, a card with directions from the hotel to the venue.
5. Mints, snacks and treats.
6. Decent coffee (or tea).

7. Tickets to a museum, movie or play, and a subway pass is your wedding is in NY. You can also find tourist guides for free!
8. Sunscreen if you’re having a beach wedding.
9. A weekend timeline if guests are invited to rehearsal dinner and other wedding events.
10. Advil or Tylenol.

We plan to include many of these items with a few special touches of our own. But this weekend we will just be printing the totes that I've purchased at Muji and will be following stenciling instructions from here.

I'm going to let you in on a little secret...I let out a scream of excitement the moment I saw that Miss Kate Middleton wore long lace sleeves.

I think that middle America has come to believe that lace wedding gowns are not in style and are what their grandmothers wore and shouldn't be worn by the modern bride. Yes, that is a stereotype but it's what the majority thinks.

After the royal wedding we all know that designers will look to the Duchesses dress as inspiration for their collections, but I'm also hoping that the middle America bride looks to her aswell.

Wedding Plans: Hair

It's been a few weeks since I've filled you in on our wedding plans. Well I'm heading home in a few weeks and during my time there I will be doing my hair trial! I have to say that next to the dress figuring out what to do with my hair has been my most favorite part of planning. I've always loved my hair(too bad I don't know how to style it at all). It's long, brown and has a natural wave and stylists love to work with it. and frankly, who doesn't love having someone play with their hair. To this day I will plop myself down in front of people so they can play with my hair.

Above are my top 4 pictures of inspiration for my wedding day hair style. Are you seeing a trend? Low, loose and natural, yet glamorous all at the same time. I'm making myself a headband to wear too (you ladies that have been reading my little blog for a while know how much I ADORE headbands)

Etsy and a Royal Wedding

Tell me, is there an easy way to take a nice picture of yourself? I have a pile of new pieces I want to post on etsy but no easy way to take a picture of them. If I were to get home before the sun goes down I would snap a few photos. oh how I want to share these with you!

I am in love with her veil... it has totally changed my mind about what kind of veil I would like to wear. also the hand beading around the entire hem is beautiful! I read that the women who were working on the dress had to wash their hands every half hour to keep the lace and fabric from getting dirty.

Also, the lace overlay and deep-v neckline were perfect for the royal-to-be.

Royal Wedding: Prince Charles and Princess Diana

Obviously one of most popular weddings is that of Princess Diana. Her dress was iconic during it's time and it still makes the new to this day.

These are my three favorite images from that day. The young girls dresses almost mimic the brides, the picture on the stairs has such a glamorous look and shows the size of the dress beautifully, and the soft kiss on the hand that Prince Charles gives his new wife is such a sweet moment between the two.

Wedding Plans: Decoration Inspiration

One of the first things I started doing when planning the wedding was search for inspiration for the decoration. You can find ideas in magazines, blogs and even home stores.

The Images above(forgive me because I have no idea where I found them) have been a main source of inspiration for me. What stands out to me is the texture in the fabric, the touches of silver and the simply-understated flowers.

You will have to wait and see how this translates into our wedding day decor but in the mean time I want to share with you a DIY tutorial on how to make your own Mercury Glass. I have yet to try it out, but I'm hoping to soon so I can incorporate this lovely detail into the decor. I'll also share with you the some of my own projects I'm doing for the big day in the weeks to come.

Wedding Plans: Back to the Basics

I'm going to start of with how I started planning for our wedding. Starting, in my opinion, is on of the biggest hurdles in the whole process. Because even though you probably have been saving bits of inspiration and ideas before you were engaged, you never fully realized the full scope of things until you actually had to do it yourself!

I started with blogs and bridal magazines, searching high and low for ideas, inspiration. It started out fine, and then one day it got out of control and so very overwhelming that I had to take a step back and take a breath. It was then that I decided I needed to have a focus. so I first tried to narrow down themes for the wedding. above are two of the inspirations that I've had saved since day one. With a tentative wedding date in the beginning of October I wanted to include those Fall colors but with a twist. I also didn't want to stick to 2 or 3 colors, I want to use tones so it was less cookie cutter.

Once I was pretty settled on a color scheme I then moved onto bigger elements like budget, number of guests and a massive search for vendors. Just to fill you in, we are getting married in Minnesota and we live in New York. So it was a bit of a task. We first made a date to fly home for a long weekend to look at venues. I then searched for venues in the area and made sure they could hold the number of people we wanted, was in our budget and had an over all look that we might be interested in. I think we saw 4 venues that weekend and new immediately after leaving the last one which one we wanted. 413 on Wacouta, the Location and space was just what we were looking for, but what really sold us what the venue coordinator. We talked with her for about an hour and made a great connection. I knew that I would be able to trust her when planning from NYC. Which I new right away was worth more in the end then paying less for a space and not knowing if your event will go the way you had been planning.

Okay so there you have it(how did I do? are you sick of me yet?). I've been learning over the past year and a half that it is hard work and you really have to be organized to plan a wedding on your own.

the best advise I can give is to trust your vendors and be happy with every decision you make.

We have a dress overload this week, first with Isaac Mizrahi collection yesterday and today with Matthew Williamsons bridal collection. I am pretty much a fan of any wedding dress that isn't made of satin or taffeta. but I am obsessed with wedding dresses that have beautiful detailing, like this beaded shift dress or the last dress that looks like the fabric is printed. A Matthew Williamson dress would be a great choice for the bride that is swaying away from tradition but would also like a bit of classic to her wedding day look.

A Vintage Dress

This is one of the most heart-felt weddings I've seen captured on film. I love that the photography by Becky Holladay looks like just another guest at the wedding(actually she was pulling double duty as she and the brides are good friends). I am also loving the vintage dress. I can't find anything about where she got it. Maybe it was her mothers or grandmothers, maybe she found it in a hidden vintage shop while on a road trip? we can only imagine.

I've been on the hunt for hair piece inspiration for a while now. At first because they are just so beautiful and I wanted to create some to sell for myself. Then I started looking personally to be inspired by something to create for my own wedding day.

My friend Christina sent me a link to this website, Chinnylulu, that does a beautiful work! My favorite is the veil. I think brides who want a veil a little out of the ordinary are to be celebrated (not that we all shouldn't be celebrated, they just have more guts that the rest of us).

Nude Pumps

Why are picking out shoes such a hard decision to make? I love them, I would buy everyone if I could, but as I've been searching for shoes to wear for my wedding I'm learning that this is going to be a harder decision than 'the' dress! I'm loving these four at the moment. I'm not going with color like most brides these days. I think a classic pump in a nude color would be great and something I can wear everyday if I wanted to.

yes, I know that this is mainly a wedding blog, but I just couldn't help myself. Yesterday I got my Martha Stewart Living magazine in the mail and a friend posted about spring and buying a plant. I guess you could say I caught a bit of the Spring fever!

Anyway, I would like to share with you some ideas I have for spring. One of which I might start with this weekend!

A Beautifully unique headboard. perfect for a young couple! Wouldn't this make for a great DIY project? It's hard to stumble upon weathered wood like this on the New York City sidewalks but I bet my family back in Minnesota would find it easily! I'm going to ask my parents to keep their eyes open for me so I can make this with the help from my dad when I'm home.

You may remember this photo from a post I did almost a year ago. and I'm still wanting to find an old dresser or desk and convert it into a little garden in our apartment. Plus, we have a corner of our living room that is the starting point for every cord you could imagine. so with something like this I could attach a cord organizer or something and hide all that nasty clutter!

And of course new plants and herbs to grow for spring! I'm wondering, do you think I could grow any vegetables in an apartment setting? I would love to try. Send your tips my way!

Happy Monday everyone! I'm not sure if any of you watched the Oscars last night, but I couldn't help doing a little post on my favorite dresses of the red carpet. There was sparkles, lace and beads... Pretty much everything I love all in an hours time.
