Farmers Market

A few weekends ago I made it to our weekly farmers market where they were celebrating 25 years!  There is always a great selection of fresh and locally grown produce but my favorite booth is the gluten free baked goods!  During the 25 year celebration there were also additional booths filled with craft and handmade items.  I really enjoyed the trailer-turn-consignment denim shop and the handmade, woven basket booth where I got a way cool basket to add to my cruiser!

I hope you all have a farmers market near where you live!

Sandpoint, Idaho

This is where we live.  Isn't it beautiful!

Here are some facts about our new town:
- became a town in 1901
- you can hear trains all day and all night (don't worry, it's not annoying, it's actually kinda peaceful)
- it was named "Most Beautiful Town in the USA" as judged by USA Today and Rand McNally
- Sunset magazine named Sandpoint one of the West’s best small towns
- National Geographic Adventure labeled it a great adventure town
- Outside magazine listed it among 20 dream towns
- Schweitzer ski area was founded in 1963
- Lake Pend Oreille (pond-er-ay) is the 5th deepest lake in the US and has 111.3 miles of shoreline
- Farmers Market filled with locally grown produce and hand made crafts (the potatoes are amazing!)
- Trails for hiking... I can't even count how many there are
- Molly the Moose (our regular town ambassador in the winter)
- Festival at Sandpoint (last year enjoyed the sounds of Barenaked ladies and more)
- Ben Stein and Viggo Mortensen are just a few celebs that own homes in the area

and there you have it!  just a few fun facts about this beautiful place!

Hey... It's me!

Hey there... It's been a while!  Here is a recap of what I've been up to this past year.

We went to Jamaica for my cousin's wedding.  Did lots of snorkeling and got to take my picture with this awesome puffer fish! (highlight of my trip)

Adopted these two gems, Roxie and Riley.
Roxie (white) is a shih-tzu/pug and Riley (black) is a Shih--tzu/pug/maltese.
They are so loved!

HIKING!  lots and lots of hiking (I even bought shoes just for hiking) I snapped this picture while on a hike here in Northern Idaho.

I took a flower hanging basket class and made this gorgeous yard accessory!  Begonias are my new favorite flower

I bought an old dresser, then re-finished it.  It looks Amazing!  I'll post pictures soon.

went to the badlands in South Dakota for a short but amazing family vacation!  It is beautiful there and if you have a chance, please visit.  go hike through the badlands national park, go say high to 4 of our presidents, buy some cheesy key-chain at Wall Drug(and take your picture on the giant jackalope), drive by crazy horse monument and hike Harney's peak!
Trust me, you won't regret it!

Oh, and did I mention we moved from NYC to Northern Idaho?  Yup!  I took a job and relocated us out to this small town on this beautiful lake.  We are completely surrounded by mountains, trees and every once in a while in the winter you might see Molly the Moose meander through town.
And yes, we love it all!

Sleeves

I really do love wedding gowns with sleeves.  I think it's sexier to cover up, not to mention so classy.  I love the above sleeves I think all would interpret well onto your wedding gown.
What do you think?

Our Wedding Video

I struggled with the decision whether or not to hire a videographer for the wedding.  I had a friend who made sure they had enough money for one and another who didn't do it at all and didn't regret it.  I was torn... UNTIL I stumbled upon Colin.  He lives in LA but was raised in Minnesota.  He had the aesthetic I was wanting in a wedding video and he was so easy to work with.  I can't tell you how many emails we had back and forth with questions and concerns from me and answers and reassurance from Colin.
We didn't meet until he morning of the wedding and he was great!  My husband to be couldn't stop talking about what a cool guy he was.  To be honest if we ever make it to LA for a trip we will probably call him up so we can hang out.

Anyway, on to our A.M.A.Z.I.N.G. wedding teaser video

Colin also has a huge heart and recently came back from a trip to Nepal with the International Nepal Fellowship to create a documentary about their mission.  If you are feeling the need to give a little(or a lot) I'm sure he would love to hear that you have donated to the cause.

feeling inspired

something about this photo is just speaking to me.

Now that I'm getting settled into my new home in the Idaho Panhandle I'm getting anxious to find the fabric stores.  I would love to stumble upon some vintage fabric stuffed away in an old home having an estate sale.  I would only hope it would be enough to make a beautiful dress like this.

oh Hi!

Hi Ladies!  Yes, it's me, Kirby!  You are all probably wondering where I've been, and the truth is, I've just been busy and have had to put blogging to the side for a little bit.  I'll bring you up to date on what has been going on with me.
I went to my cousins wedding in South Dakota, couldn't fly back to NYC because of the hurricane, made it back in time for labor day weekend, enjoyed it with my fiance, signed us up for dance lessons, working out and getting in shape for the big day, making sure everything for the wedding is set and if it isn't spend my evenings working them out.  And that's about it!  so yup, we are getting married in 2 1/2 weeks.  It is coming up quickly.  I'm heading for Minnesota in a week to do all the last week things that you can't do until the last week AND finally get my dress fitted and altered.

The image above is just so beautiful, the dress is stunning and is totally inspiring me as I set off to create a collection of my own!  So happy Wednesday everyone!  Glad to be back!

Pro-bono anyone?

Last week I mentioned in this post that I wanted to re-focus my blog.  I want to take Colors of Honey to the next level.  Having a business of my own has always been a dream of mine.  While I may not be there yet, I want to start taking the steps towards that goal.

obviously the first step is to create a product(yes, I am working on bigger product than what I have currently in my etsy shop).  Those of you who have been following me for a while can probably guess what that is.

The second, in my opinion anyways, would be branding and marketing.  Isn't the above image of the branding eye-catching?  This is where you come in.  I would love your tips, ideas and your help.  Have you been through this yourself before?  know anyone that would be able to work with my non-existent budget and would be able to help me create a brand of my own?  I know a little of what I need to do and how I can market myself and my product, but there is the creative end, the tying it all together that I just need an outsiders eye and help on.  come on, don't be shy, leave a comment or send me an email {colorsofhoney@gmail.com}  I'm sure we could work something out!

Aug 22, 2011

you are one of a kind

Today I'm working on a custom hair piece request (don't you just love my phone quality photo that I took too late into the night?)  Oh, you didn't know I did that?  well now you do!  I really love working with brides to create a product they are in love with and is exactly what they dreamed of.  It really makes the hard work and long hours pay off.
--------------------
speaking of dreams, my dream is to one day have a space of my own that I can invite brides to meet with me in person for consultation on either a custom accessory or wedding gown. I can just picture it now, light grey paint on the walls, a big comfy couch and bridal magazines on the coffee table so you and your mom(or MOH) can flip through and continue to be inspired about your big day.  There would be a rack of sample dresses(made by yours truly), open shelves of sashes, hair clips, headbands and then there would be the variety of veils to try on.  Then there would be a dressing room with so many mirrors you could just loose yourself(sounds dreamy, right?)

as for my sewing room?  I'm loving this right now.  its organized, but still leaves me room to be creative

Okay so this dream may be a ways off and there are many things I have to do before I get there, but it is always good to have dreams and goals.  Gives you something to fight for!

Tell me, what are your dreams and future goals?

A real wedding to 'Cherish': Katie and Cory

I recently received a sweet email the other week from a 'newlywed'.  Katie and Cory were married May 2010 in Louisville, Kentucky.  Yes I think you should be newlywed's for a while, after all 10 years together is still young compared to 50!  This is what Katie had to say about their wedding day.

From the Bride: If I’m going to tell you about my wedding, I want to start with the word cherish.

Cherish came to English via the French verb “chérir” with little change in meaning.  The Oxford English dictionary defines it as “to hold dear, treat with tenderness and affection, to make much of.”  I cannot think of a better word to associate with our wedding.  It was a day to hold our family and friends dear, to treat each other with tenderness and affection, and a celebration to make much of.

I spent eight months preparing for our wedding.  I planned, crafted, sewed, made invitations, made playlists, and occasionally cried over the guest list that grew exponentially.  The day came and I went through the regular preparations—hair, make-up, gown, veil, etc.  Our “first look” moment was sweet and had exactly the calming effect I intended; the bridal stage fright I’d had from the moment I got engaged disappeared.  We took photos outside, on the first sunny and comfortable day in weeks, with our relatives and laughed with our families.  We went into the church for the ceremony, which featured misty-eyed parents and grandparents, a corny joke from our pastor and friend that still made us laugh, and a wedding ring that wouldn’t go over my knuckle (I wriggled it on when everyone closed their eyes for prayer).  I don’t even remember what song played as we walked back out of the church, partly because I was preoccupied by the whole being married thing and partly because I was making a conscious effort not to trip over my own feet or dress.   Then there were more photos, goofy faces from our ringbearer, a quiet moment together, and we went in for the reception.  We ate and then someone—my dad, probably, stood up for the first toast.

Then the day turned from memorable to unforgettable.  We hadn’t planned how the toasts would go; we figured our siblings and parents would say something and then we’d move on to the next thing.  Instead, we sat listening to at least ten different people who stood and offered us support, kindness, wisdom, and the occasional goofy story from childhood.

All those months of preparation were devoted to planning a big party for the people I love, but nothing could have prepared me for the great outpouring of love that we felt on that day, not just from each other, but from the people who came.  That atmosphere of friendship and joy is what I will always remember from our wedding, even if my dress was completely perfect and my husband isn’t so bad, either.

Katie's advise for other brides: When receiving opinions and pressure from people- listen, smile, acknowledge their idea, then do whatever you like. I figured this out halfway through planning my wedding and it definitely helped keep my head on straight! I got a few great ideas from people by listening, but also left more than a few ideas out. Most of them were good, but not right for our wedding.
I also reminded myself frequently that the wedding was to celebrate our marriage's beginning, and that our marriage, not a perfect day, was the point. To further this end, I read articles and books on marriage prep and I made a point to have at least one day a week with no planning and plenty of relaxed time with my husband-to-be. It helps keep perspective!

Back to the Basics

So sorry for my absence and lack of posts.  I have been re-evaluating my little blog for a few weeks now and to be honest my feelings about it go up and down.  After reading a post by this inspiring young woman about her own blog, I couldn't help but think that I wanted to do the same for Colors of Honey.

I truly want to take my blogging to the next level, I want to bring my readers one of a kind inspiration that comes from yours truly and I want to continue to inspire your wedding fashion for years to come.

I hope and ask for all your support as I continue to find my niche in the blogging world.  Over the next few weeks I hope to add a little more about myself so we can all get to know each other a little better and this week I will also be posting a real wedding that was submitted to me by a lovely bride excited to share her wedding with all of you!

Registry favorites

registry

Now that the invites are sent and we are starting to receive replies in the mail(isn't this so exciting!), I've turned my focus on the last little details and of course, sprucing up our registries.  I'm not a greedy person at all, but I know this is apart of the process and having been a guest at weddings previously, it does help in the gift purchasing process. Especially if you are a young couple and have a cluster of things that you've received as hand-me-downs through out the year, this is a chance to start creating a home together.  So I put together a little board highlighting some of my favorite registry items, all of which we will probably purchase if we don't receive them as gifts.

My favorites are:
Kitchenaid Blender in Red
Molcajete to make my famous guacamole!
his and hers tumblers by Kate Spade
produce bags, because we should all do our part to save our planet
Compost bin to make our garden grow
and
luggage by London Fog, because every newlywed should have a new matching set of luggage to take on their honeymoon!

Also, head over to Hey Gorgeous and a post they did on making registry gifts more personable.  I found it so helpful, especially during this wedding season!

back it up

I think by now you all know how much I love details that make a dress more than just ordinary.  Don't you just LOVE the back detail on this Claire Pettibone gown?  If your back is your best feature, try this wedding dress on!

Oh, Christos

I think I will forever love this dress by Christos.  The polka dot fabric is what I love the most.  It gives an almost whimsical and fairy-tail like feeling to your wedding day look.

the Garter

Now that I have just 60 days to go(60 days can you believe it!), I'm just picking up those last minute items.  One of those things will be my garter!

I actually think that I may make my garter as I have the skills too and it would save us a bundle to boot!  Don't you just love the inspiration I've found?!

Tell me, if you could have your dream garter, what would it be?

the right kind of bling

If you are a bride that wants some sparkle and shine to your wedding dress but don't want to look over the top, I think this is a perfect option for you!  I love the silhouette of the top of the dress as it is flattering on most women.  the added sparkle is just enough to make you notice, but not too much to make your guests whisper in disgust!

How was your weekend everyone?

the count down to the wedding really starts for me today, 2 months to go!
